Voting Day!

The votes are in - at least for DES!! And it's a close race! After listening to the third grades Ladybug Award Podcast, here's how K-3 DES students voted. These results will be sent to the Center for the Book in Concord and will be combined with the votes of primary grade children from all over New Hampshire. The winner will be announced sometime in December - we'll post those results here as well!

Thanksgiving!

Think you know a lot about this holiday and the people who inspired it? The folks at NHPTV and Granite State Challenge have a two holiday quizzes for elementary students - test your knowledge about Pilgrims,  then try the one about Thanksgiving. If you get a wrong answer, the quiz will tell you the correct one - and that will help you learn! Get a family member and give them both a try!

Ladybug Book #10: Under the Snow

Under the Snow is the only nonfiction book that's nominated for this year's NH Ladybug award. Its author is Melissa Stewart, who knows a lot about science and animals. You can visit her website here. She has lots of activities and information for kids.

This story is set in the winter. It tells what goes on under the snow and ice and how many small animals hibernate during the long cold months. Lots of animals curl up in a ball to stay warm - just like we do!

This book has a illuminated letter at the beginning of the story's first sentence and at the beginning of the last sentence! That's different!

Ladybug Book #9: Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep

The author of this book is Maureen Wright and the illustrator is Will Hillenbrand. Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep is a funny story about Old Man Winter trying to get Bear to go into hibernation for the winter!

Garrett made a text-to-text connection to the book Bear Snores On, except in that book, the animals, like rabbits and owls, are awake while Bear is asleep.

Some of us wonder if bear might have an ear infection because he has a hard time understanding what Old Man Winter is telling him to do.

Jack once had a bear that came into his yard but then he stopped so Jack thinks he must have gone into hibernation. Haley has bears at her house, too!

Ladybug Book #7: Otis

Otis is a farm tractor who makes friends with a sad little calf. They have happy days together until Otis is replaced by a newer big yellow tractor. But in the end, Otis is the only one who can save the day! The author and illustrator of this book is Loren Long. He must be a very good illustrator because he is illustrating a book for the President, Barak Obama!

Ladybug Book #8: Princess Hyacinth

The subtitle of this book is the surprising tale of a girl who floated! Kindergartners listed other things that float like balloons, floaties, seeds, and leaves falling from trees. The funniest part of this story is when Princess Hyacinth floats in her Royal Underwear! The illustrator of this book is Lane Smith and the author is Florence Parry Heide. She's as old as Mrs. Curren, and she's still writing books!!
