Fun With The Sun!

The Sun?
The last week of school, DES students took part in an all-school study of the Sun. In each classroom, students conducted experiments having to do with the heat, light, and energy of the sun. Each morning, students met before school in the multipurpose room and sang this song about the properties of the sun. Every day at lunchtime, a new Sun-related book was read to the group and students had the chance to share their new classroom learning with their friends. Mrs. Robinson helped kids learn about the importance of sun safety.

In ICT classes, students learned about the sun as a star and its place at the center of the Solar System. We watched BrainPop and BrainPop Jr videos about the Solar System. Many of us viewed parts of this YouTube video (without sound or the music!) that showed the relative size of the Moon, Earth, and the Sun as well as stars much bigger than our own! We read (and listened to) just a bit of the information available from NASA's StarChild website.

Highlights of the study were visits and experiments by Drs. Mary and Doug Earick, recipents of the grant that funded our Solar Week, from Plymouth State University. The last day of school, staff and students entered an inflatable planetarium in the multi-purpose room and viewed a night sky show from the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord.

Leave a comment about what you learned! It sure was fun, wasn't it? Thank you to all who helped make this Fun with the Sun week at DES!
